Nutcracker & the faulty snow

I was surprised when my friend asked if I would like to go to our little town's first production of the Nutcracker because, well, what college age average guy enjoys sitting through hours of ballet? But I really wanted to go so I said I would love to!

Lets just say that this production was all you would expect from a hometown ballet. It was cute, the dancers adorable and inexperience - and it was also full of quirks, which is probably what made the date so great.

It was by far the most entertaining ballet I've ever gone to. The Christmas tree (one of the only props on the stage) struggled staying up and took turns slouching in different directions. The audience laughed when the cute little boy playing the king mouse did a very dramatic interpretation of his death. Something feel from the stage ceiling.

But my favorite part was during a sweet slow song. There was supposed to be snow gently falling around the floaty light blue chiffon clothed ballerina's. However, something had malfunctioned in this process which resulted in all the snow blasting down in one spot. This became even better when the dancers had to stop while one performed her solo and a lucky ballerina got to pose right underneath the blizzard. So she just stood there, collecting loads of fake snow in her hair, in her face, on her tutu all the while beaming her graceful smile. Oh how I loved that ballet.

I wasn't too surprised though when my date asked at intermission if I wanted to just leave and get ice cream. So we did. But I hope the rest of the ballet was as quirky as the first. I give a full two thumbs up to our hometown nutcracker production. Lets hope it becomes an annual event.
