Q: Write about a vivid childhood memory.
It wasn't until the moment I saw the man enter that I suddenly realized what a stupid idea this was. As I lay in the drawer I thought about the dozens of other places I would rather be, and for a three year old that is a lot of places.
It all started with a game of Hide-and-Seek. My cousins were visiting from Las Vegas and we had lots of pent up energy ready to be usd on something fun. Because I was one of the youngest, my cousin offered to hide me. We found the perfect place: the small cupboard drawer in the downstairs bathroom. Apparently this location was too ideal. What felt like hours but was probably only about a half hour rolled by and there I remained: curled up in my drawer peeking through the small crack that my cousin had left so I could breath. I was starting to get very uncomfortable around this time and was about to call out for help in getting out when suddenly the door opened and in walked my Uncle Kreed. All thoughts to call out were suddenly halted as I didn't know this man very well and as a shy 3-year-old would have been mortified for him to help me out.
So....
I sat there and waited. And waited. Towards the end of his trip to the bathroom he must have spotted some small movement in the tiny crack in the drawer because suddenly he said, "William! Is that you?" William is his son and my younger cousin.
"No..." my squeaky voice replied.
"Amberlee?"
My silence confirmed his assumption.
"What are you doing in there?"
Again, silence on my part. (I was really shy.)
"Well I'm almost done. Hold on a minute and then I can help you get out."
After the toilet flushed and he washed his hands, he pulled open the drawer. Freedom. I was so mortified that I don't even think I apologized or thanked him. I simply ran off with my face flushed ready to surrender to the seeker and loose the game. But there was no game loosing. There wasn't even a game.
Apparently they had stopped playing long before.
