I worked in DC for a semester and a co-worker of mine found out day one of working together that I was mormon. He certainly let me know how he felt about it too with his incredulous tone of voice. Oh, we had great talks, but most were about why we wouldn't have sex before marriage or drink, etc. He rarely asked about the gospel until one special day right after Easter break. This is how our conversation went:
Him: "Do Mormons celebrate Easter?"
Me: "Yes. We are Christian."
Then there was a two hour break until he said this:
Him: "So is Jesus Christ as big of a deal to you as he is to the Catholic church?"
Me: "Definitely."
Him: "So.... what's up with Joseph Smith?"
I then explained to him what we believed. That Joseph Smith restored the church that Christ originally established when he was on earth. That we don't worship Joseph Smith, but rather believe that God is our Father and Jesus Christ is his son, atoned for our sins, was crucified and then resurrected. I told him that The Book of Mormon is another testament about Jesus Christ and about the love he has for all of us.
It wasn't an awkward situtation but I was very grateful that I had the opportunity to clarify what I believe. For more information on what Mormons, or members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, believe click here.
