Janine & Kiel

A really long time ago (or four years ago) I met this cute girl named Janine when she came to visit my Aunt Michele. We met during a "Dave Hike" which really means an all day hike going down/up/over/across places you really aren't sure you will be able to make, named after my Uncle Dave. The mastermind of these amazing hikes.

So this was Janine and the family then (she's the lovely blonde):

Yesterday I got to go visit Janine. This time in her home town of Kiel, which is conveniently only about an hour and a half by train from where I'm living.

Kiel is relatively small, full of ringing church bells, an amazing elevator at the town hall that never stops (you just walk on and walk off. So cool), boats, many drunk homeless friends, ferries, yummy food, farmer's markets and beaches.

Janine was a lovely host, and it was a perfect weather day. We took a ferry across to Laboe where we spent most of the day climbing the stairs of the naval memorial, walking along the beach, eating a fish sandwich (salmon, salmon I love you) & ice cream, and touring a U-boat. I had an important realization that living on a submarine would be my own personal Hell. Yikes.

Oh and we also drank great hot chocolate as our dinner, because on vacation you can do things like that.

Some of these pictures aren't very self explanatory - like the elevator and the one with all the cement, which shows the view looking down the inside of the memorial we climbed up. And the end of the torpedo that you can see in the U-boat.
